According to the Institute of Education Sciences and the US Department of Education, New Mexico is among the three lowest-ranking states in average literacy scores. New Mexico also has the highest concentration of low-literacy adults in the nation.

 
 

Studies show that early literacy has a long-lasting impact on children. Growing up in a “language-rich environment” has positive effects on school success, graduation rates, earning potential, health, and well-being. Additionally, a lack of this environment has been linked to an increase in arrests and incarcerations.
